Door dimension regulations in the European Union and in the USA

Door dimension regulations in the European Union

In the European Union, there are no unified regulations for door dimensions, as these can vary by member state. However, there are some common standards and recommendations widely followed:

1.Door height:

-Standard internal door height is typically between 200 cm and 210 cm.

-External door height often ranges from 200 cm to 220 cm.

2.Door width:

-Standard internal door width ranges from 70 cm to 90 cm.

-External door width can range from 80 cm to 100 cm or more, depending on needs and usage.

3.Doors for disabled access:

-Doors must have a minimum width of 90 cm to accommodate wheelchair access.

Door dimension regulations in the USA

In the United States, door dimension standards are regulated by several organizations, including the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the International Building Code (IBC), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

1.Door height:

-Standard internal door height is usually 80 inches (203.2 cm).

-External door height can range from 80 inches to 96 inches (203.2 cm to 243.8 cm).

2.Door width:

-Standard internal door width ranges from 24 inches to 36 inches (61 cm to 91.4 cm).

-External door width often ranges from 32 inches to 36 inches (81.3 cm to 91.4 cm).

3.Doors for disabled access (ADA):

-Doors must have a minimum width of 32 inches (81.3 cm) when the door is open 90 degrees.

-ADA regulations also require doors to have a minimum height of 80 inches (203.2 cm).

While both the European Union and the USA have standards for door dimensions, the differences are notable, particularly in widths and accessibility requirements. In the European Union, standards can vary by country, whereas in the USA, regulations are more uniform at the national level due to rules like the ADA.

Door width and height: measuring the door leaf or the entire frame?

Door width:

-Door width typically refers to the width of the door leaf, which is the movable part of the door.

-In some cases, door width can also include the entire door assembly, which means the door leaf plus the door frame (jamb).

      Door height:

-Like width, door height usually refers to the height of the door leaf.
-The height of the entire door assembly, including the frame, may be slightly greater by a few centimeters.

How to calculate the wall opening for preparing the door installation?

To correctly prepare the wall opening for a door, both the dimensions of the door leaf and the frame need to be considered. Here are the steps to follow:

        1.Measure the door leaf:

-Measure the width and height of the door leaf. For example, if the door leaf dimensions are 90 cm x 200 cm, note these values.

        2.Measure the frame:

-Add the width and height of the frame to the dimensions of the door leaf. The frame typically adds a few centimeters to each side of the door.

-For instance, if the frame adds 2 cm to each side (totaling 4 cm to the width) and 2 cm to the height, the dimensions of the entire door assembly will be 94 cm x 202 cm.

        3.Include installation clearance:

-To facilitate door installation, leave some clearance between the frame and the wall. This is usually about 1-2 cm on each side.

-Add the installation clearance to the dimensions of the entire door assembly. In our example, if you add 1 cm of clearance on each side, the final wall opening size will be 96 cm x 204 cm.

        4.Summary of wall opening dimensions:

-The dimensions of the wall opening should be the width of the door leaf + frame width + installation clearance, and the height of the door leaf + frame height + installation clearance.

        In our example:

-Width of the opening: 90 cm (door leaf) + 4 cm (frame) + 2 cm (installation clearance) = 96 cm

-Height of the opening: 200 cm (door leaf) + 2 cm (frame) + 2 cm (installation clearance) = 204 cm

Example calculation for different door dimensions:

Standard interior door (80 cm x 200 cm) with frame:

-Width of the opening: 80 cm + 4 cm (frame) + 2 cm (installation clearance) = 86 cm
-Height of the opening: 200 cm + 2 cm (frame) + 2 cm (installation clearance) = 204 cm

Standard exterior door (90 cm x 210 cm) with Frame:

-Width of the opening: 90 cm + 4 cm (frame) + 2 cm (installation clearance) = 96 cm

-Height of the opening: 210 cm + 2 cm (frame) + 2 cm (installation clearance) = 214 cm

In summary, to prepare the wall opening for a door, you need to consider the dimensions of the door leaf, the frame, and additional installation clearance to make the installation process easier.
